Spears Woods January 23, 2016

Spears Woods, where Palos Restoration Project got its start over 25 years ago, is remarkable diverse. You see woodland and wetland, placid slough and rolling prairie, one often just a stone's throw from the other.

January 23rd found us on a wooded rise overlooking Boomerang Slough.  More foot traffic here than many of our work sites, so we were able to talk the gospel of restoration to several passers-by in the course of the day. Our thanks to them for stopping to chat.

A big shout-out to Kathy Bruch and her crew of chain sawyers from Atrium Landscape. It bears repeating that Kathy donates their services to our efforts, and to the preserves, on weekends throughout the winter. They knock down everything that's marked for removal and, when we inevitably fall behind on hauling, help get it all to the fires.

Another shout-out goes to Gloria Orozco and the interns from Friends of the Forest Preserves. Whether cutting, hauling, or helping start a fire, they are unfailingly energetic and an immense help. Friends of the Forest Preserves is a not-for-profit doing great work in Cook County, a strong supporter of the restoration community.

Though late getting our fires started, we still managed to burn eight brush piles by day's end. And day's end  it was; by the time the fires burned down and the last volunteers walked out, we were treated to the sight of hot embers glowing on the hillside against the falling  dusk.

A battalion of chain sawyers came out for this one; the last time I saw that many orange helmets was on the sideline at a Florida football game. They cut a lot, and everyone hauled a lot, with five robust fires burning well into the afternoon.

The work done will allow more light to the ground, spurring the growth of native sedges Joe identified on the high ground seen in the first picture.

The second set of pictures includes two taken on Monday, when embers still smoldered and tiny ice crystals formed on twigs just downwind of the burn.

We had a bit of rain, a bit of snow, not enough of either to impede the work. And when the snow came, later in the day, things got seriously pretty.

Another huge assist from sawyers from Atrium Landscape and Friends of the Forest Preserves; without them far less gets done.

Cap Sauers January 2, 2016

Cap Sauers never disappoints. The terrain, the expanse of the place, it's truly special. The walk from roadside to work site was, by itself, enough to make one's day.

Kathy Bruch's Atrium Landscape chainsaw crew came to help, as did a team from Friends of the Forest Preserves. They put a lot of stuff on the ground, all  of which had to be dragged to the fires and burned.

Maybe that's why Joe recently was overheard wishing Santa would send some strong, hard-working volunteers to our heavy winter workdays. Someone was listening; we had three of our many Kevins (Kevin C, F, & G), Jim from Thatcher Woods, John Marlin, Doug, Margaret, Kathy, all the usual crew, lopping and tossing and doing a terrific job. Thanks to everyone for their hard work!

The following day Bob Arentz hosted a smaller workday, also at Cap Sauers, working near the Visitation Trail clearing brush.
