September 29, 2015 Pioneer Woods

Moraine Valley Community College sent 25 volunteers to Pioneer on their Staff Development Day. Aspiring lumberjacks all, they cleared a large area in the lowlands near the creek and didn't skip a beat when a light rain began around lunchtime. They came to work!

The preceding day Diana Krug hosted 42 students from Curie High School at McClaughry Springs Woods. This group cut brush and did water testing in Mill Creek. They are regulars at Diana's site and do a great job.

Student and corporate groups (and individual students earning service hours) make a huge difference in the amount of work we can accomplish. They are always welcome at our sites.

Spears Woods 100 Years Event

It's a good time to kick off this blog, as September 2015 was a month of significant anniversaries.

One hundred years for the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

Twenty-five years for Palos Restoration Project.

Our workday at Spears was part of the Forest Preserve's "100 Years 100 Events" Centennial. We had 13 people on the workday, including three new volunteers, two provided by REI which held a 5K run at Bullfrog Lake that morning. We cut and burned brush, mostly honeysuckle.

In the afternoon Steward Joe Neumann led a short tour of Spears Woods. Our first workday, held in September 1990, was at Spears. Joe pointed out landmarks from way back when, and changes that have come since.

Two of the three original members still active with our Palos group, John Marlin and Joe Neumann, are pictured below. The third, Roger Keller, was unable to attend.

I'm Jan Pietrzak with the Palos Restoration Project. This blog and website were created for your information and enjoyment.

I hope you'll be encouraged and inspired to volunteer at any of the numerous forest preserves in our area.
