Saturday Joe and the volunteers returned to Willow Springs Woods for another shot at a burgeoning population of bull thistle. This plant is well-named, with thorns that can easily penetrate your glove, forcing one to approach easy plant gingerly. I wasn't able to attend due to a schedule conflict, but can safely guess it wasn't eliminated, since we're returning there this Saturday August 31.
Swallow Cliff Woods Sunday August 25
Teri Radke and Emily Russell did a NEWTS volunteer initiative on Sunday, turning out a terrific group of seven new volunteers who braved the early morning heat. Thank you Margaret, Gavin, Jessica, Anthony, Nathan, Ebrahim, and Matt!
We collected native seed, mostly native grasses (bottlebrush, woodland brome, and silky rye). Our new people quickly became adept at spotting the target plants. At least three of them found doll's eyes, which is a high point (to me at least) because it's not typically plentiful in this preserve. A small amount of Joe Pye weed was ready, as were a couple other species.
