I do believe this was our last shot of the season at white sweet clover at McMahon. While I still found some plants at another prairie, this Tuesday, still flowering, by now many have dropped a large portion of their seed. One of the reasons sweet clover is so tenacious is its ability to form new plants and flowers over a stretch of several weeks, so even total elimination of plants in sight on one day doesn't guarantee success.
Given the population of sweet clover at McMahon, we never come close to hitting all the plants. All can do is push the line back, clear a specific area, and wait 'til next summer to renew the effort. We certainly are making progress, working much father east than several years ago. One landmark tree on the south side of the prairie, which we used to seek for shade at break time, now stands in the distance.
I'm in awe at the magnitude of the job and the energy that volunteers bring to it.
