Saturday was a pretty day in a pretty place as we wandered the woodlands at Cap Sauers looking for native seeds, mostly grasses, to collect. Teri Radke from Volunteer Resources, Forest Preserves of Cook County, came to assist.
Our most abundant target was bottlebrush grass, which is the easiest to find and identify, especially for newer volunteers. We also collected a small amount of woodland brome and silky rye, the latter grass present in substantial numbers but mostly not ripe enough for collection.
As summer passes into autumn more species will be ready for collection; on Sunday August 25 we plan to collect woodland species at Swallow Cliff South, and a month later, on Sunday September 29, we'll go to Cherry Hill Woods for prairie plants. Other sites may also do seed collection; I know Margaret Tobin, steward at Cap Sauers, is interested in doing more..
