Cap Sauers Holding Saturday July 20
We worked on summer weeds not far from the site of the old Visitation Boys Camp, with a mild sense of paranoia upon hearing margaret's warning of foundations and pits we might stumble across, including toliet pits. Yeah, that got my attention.

Lots of Canada thistle is found here and we beheaded them with great fervor. We also saw how well the native prairie thistle, Cirsium discolor, is rebounding in the same area.

Sunday I joined John Marlin for more weed assaults. I deadheaded teasel in an old pasture while he sprayed Melilotus nearby. After an hour we switched locations, crossing Bluff Road to the nature preserve side for a walk that was more scouting than actual weed removal.

We made our way to a stretch above the creek where the Atrium Landscape crew thinned trees last year; it's recovering nicely, with numerous forbs loving the extra sunlight and filling in places that once were less rich with growth. Very nice!

McMahon Woods & Fen Saturday July 13
This was our third week in a row pulling white sweet clover on the McMahon prairie, one I had to skip due to another activity. Now the sweet clover is closer to dropping seed, making its removal even more critical, so kudos to all attended.

While much of our sweet clover removal comes at McMahon, it's by no means limited to that site. I found some at Cherry Hill prairie yesterday and will be working on it this afternoon and tomorrow morning. The prairie at Sundown has far too much, and volunteers have helped tackle it the past two Tuesdays. It truly takes a village.

McMahon Woods & Fen Saturday July 6
We had a larger volunteer group this week, welcome news and somewhat unexpected on a holiday weekend. Our target remains the robust population of white sweet clover on the prairie and we chipped away at a bit more of it on Saturday. We will return this Saturday, July 13 for another bite.

It's hard to overstate how good the prairie looks this year, with native wildflowers enjoying their first of several recent years not stymied by periods of spring drought. I need to go back to some early July pictures from those years because my impression is that plants are taller this time around.

We walked in on a diagonal line from the parking lot, which was not a good idea. The same terrain that was easily navigable in winter and early spring is now grown thick with forbs and grasses. Note to self; exit on a different route.

Once we got to our destination we were fine, with lots of white sweet clover to occupy our time. Most of it we could pull and the more stubborn plants, either thicker or with multiple stems, needed clippers. In some places it was relatively scattered, in others found in higher concentrations. We worked well and composted two impressive piles by quitting time, when the cloud cover that blessed us earlier had largely departed.

As always, the best part was being on the prairie in prime time for new blooms. I saw my first compass plants flowers of the season as well as large numbers of Monarda and coneflowers; both were starting to bloom a week ago and were much more numerous this time.
